Boris Epshteyn talks to host Steve Bannon about the audio of a phone call between House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Rep. Liz Cheney that happened shortly after the Jan. 6 riot. You can hear the call here, as featured on the “Rachel Maddow Show.” But the claims that McCarthy said he would tell Trump to resign are intentionally misleading. What McCarthy actually said was “I’m serious thinking of” telling Trump to resign, and agains “What I think I’m going to do…” He uses the subjunctive mood in his conversation with Cheney meaning it is hypothetical, not intentional. “The only discussion I would have with him…” means McCarthy is talking about what he MIGHT do if he has the call. Obviously, McCarthy had further discussions with other people that persuaded him NOT to call Trump and urge him to resign.”
